Why Fat?

As a parent, I have some pretty strict rules for my kids. There are certain words they are not allowed to use or say, and if heard using them, they are punished. Some of these words include, hate, stupid, idiot, fat, etc..

Yes I have an issue with the word fat. Why you might ask? Because when my children started using ‘fat’ as a mean word to each other, I wanted it stopped.

I find it utterly amazing how early they learn that ‘fat’ is a hurtful, mean word that makes the other person feel bad. What’s even funnier..my kids aren’t fat, but they know it’s hurtful so they use it. Which infuriates me.

My oldest daughter is 11, she wears a 12 slim and is almost 5 feet tall. My youngest is almost 9 and wears a 12. She is also very tall. She has a different build than her sister, but neither of them are fat by any means.

Where am I going with all of this? Let me explain. If you have children, and you don’t put a stop to the behavior, you are just as guilty as they are.

We went shopping this past weekend for school clothes and apparently someone has been teasing my daughter about being fat. She ended up in tears and refused to try anything on. I spent the rest of the weekend talking to her about learning how to love herself and how to be happy with herself and not to listen to what people say.

If you allow your own children to call names and be bullies without consequence, you are just as at fault and you should be ashamed. It’s not just kids being kids. It’s kids causing self esteem and self confidence issues because of ignorance.

Yes I am quite upset about this. To see my child who is healthy, loves playing outside, swimming, etc.. worry so much at the age of 8 over something that shouldn’t be an issue pisses me off. It’s hurtful and unnecessary.

Changes start at home. Don’t look the other way and chalk it up to kids being kids because it’s so much more than that.
